Cuban Cycling Great Pedro Pablo Perez Wakes from Coma

HAVANA, Cuba, July 21 (acn) Cuban cyclist Pedro Pablo Perez has awoken from a coma that lasted several days after he was admitted to a hospital in Pinar del Rio, suffering from severe cerebral lacerations.

Trabajadores newspaper reported that Perez, Cuba's best cyclist over the last ten years, is improving both physically and neurologically, but remains in serious condition.

Perez, 31, was involved in a car accident on July 14 in the province of Pinar del Rio and was taken to the Abel Santamaria hospital of the provincial capital where he still remains.

Doctors reported that he is responding to complex commands and is gradually improving.

Perez is the only Cuban cyclist who has qualified for the Beijing Olympic Games in the men's competition. His girlfriend, Yoanka Gonzales, world and Pan American champion, will be participating in several track-racing events in Beijing.

Perez won Cuba's Cycling Tour for the fifth time in February 2008, and announced he would be retiring after the Beijing Olympics.
